 Serbia, Djokovic, Lithium and politics

14.01.22.  Adding to the NoVax Djokovic saga, his motherland Serbia will decide whether Rio Tinto can proceed with developing a lithium mine in the country after their general election in April, its prime minister told Reuters Meanwhile, protests by local communities continue. Global miner Rio Tinto committed $2.4 billion to develop a lithium-borates project near Loznica in the western Jadar valley in 2021. The proposal attracted widespread opposition from local communities on concerns over environmental damage, culminating in the local municipality scrapping a plan. “The project is paused until we in Serbia agree on what we want to do, whether we want to go farther in exploration, exploitation and use of lithium or not,” Ana Brnabic said in an interview on Tuesday. However, in the imbroglio now surrounding the tennis great Novak Djokovic, he took to Instagram on Sunday night to voice his opinion regarding the current protests that have been raging in Serbia over the proposed Lithium mining project.

The last few days have seen the public express their displeasure over the government’s plan to allow Rio Tinto, a mining company, to extract lithium in the country, despite environmental concerns. The situation was deeply concerning for the 20-time Grand Slam champion as he was compelled to lend his support to his fellow countrymen over the matter. “I am a man before I’m an athlete” said Djokovic! It may surprise that the number-one tennis player in the world and the necessary daily training would leave little time to be a climate warrior in the making. Djokovic further pointed out that in tennis, every aspect of an athlete’s life, such as food, air, water, etc affects the final result. Greta of Co2 would heartily agree.

Deport Djokovic, and guarantee the Lithium mine is blocked, Mr Hawaii, when are you going to step up to the crease and end this fiasco?

The inconsistency is apparent with the government, as exposed in The Courier Mail this morning (paywalled), where in Proserpine, Queensland this occurred with a Brazilian man on an expired visa.

    Quote in part:

“Andre Salviano Turato, 29, faced Proserpine Magistrates Court this week after police found multiple LSD tabs in his car outside Cannonvale McDonald’s just after 11pm on November 25, 2021.

The court heard a background check revealed his illegal status as well as intelligence in relation to supplying dangerous drugs.

Magistrate James Morton said it was highly unusual to have an “illegal citizen” in his court with “no police outside waiting to arrest him”.”

And “He sentenced Turato to pay a $300 fine within seven days, with no conviction recorded.”

Double standards at play as usual, thus confirming my suspicion the Djokovic situation is purely political to enhance the re-election prospects of the failed Coalition government.

‘Before joining Scott Morrison’s office as chief of staff, Dr John Kunkel served as the former head of government relations at Rio Tinto and the former deputy chief executive of the Minerals Council of Australia.’

I am sure, Scottie from marketing had a little chat with Dr Kunkel and advised not to upset the Bosnians

It sure is a dilemma for Scottie , Rio Tinto not only a big NLP donor , and fat chance he thinks getting votes at the next election ( the ones who want Djokovic deported won’t vote NLP anyway) , however deporting him could well jeopardise the relations with the Serbs and possible other parties / countries as unreliable in my previous reply referred to Bosnia , my mistake should be Serbia

Although, one should note, “.. jeopardis[ing] relations with the Serbs ..” should be a no concern whatsoever to Australia.
If No-vaxx Jokersnitch has broken Australian law, or regulations, then imshi-alla with him.

I’ll bet RIO TINTO wins out game set and match for big money.

As some cynic commented,” The POLL numbers are in.” It seems that Djokovic is to be deported.

But I’ll believe it when I see it. He must be the only human being on the planet that’s trying to stay in Victoria-Stan, His legal team will appeal which is what you can do if you’re loaded with the Big Bucks. And then there’s the “flexible” Victorian Justice system, You never know if he ends up staying he might as well stand for Parliament as well.

Or, knowing how Dogears Dan’s peoples democratic republic of victoriastan operates, looking specifically at its legal system here, he could find himself being charged with pedophilia (in the sacristy, by the colonel, with a racquet).
