Remember the ABS census screwup?

Remember the ABS census screwup?

Meanwhile in the bureaucratic world of total morons…

Well… you might also remember Malcolm Turnbull doing a war dance over the ABS incompetence saying, “heads will roll”. The only thing rolled by Turnbull is perhaps an egg and bacon roll. But this one, only a couple of days into the SSM postal vote, has made a real joke of $122 million spent with all security measures covered. All you need to corrupt the entire plan is a two dollar torch from a Reject shop—yep a torch will do it! What else will be found before the November 7 deadline?

Some Australians have expressed their concerns about the privacy of the same-sex marriage postal survey, after photos shared widely on social media appeared to expose a trick that could reveal the responses inside sealed envelopes.

SSM postal survey envelopes reveal same-sex marriage responses under torch light, prompting privacy concerns

A photo that was initially shared on Facebook showed how shining a torch light over the reply-paid envelope included with the survey could reveal the marked Yes or No box on the form inside.

“So we have wasted $122 million on a survey where a torch can reveal the answer through the reply envelope it came with,” the user wrote.

“So any postal worker with a vendetta against the opposing side can go through and remove votes as they see fit. (Or workmate if you post from work). Bravo government.”

The ABC conducted a test and found the torch light did indeed reveal a clear mark in the Yes or No box.

The Facebook post was later shared on reddit, where users discussed their concerns about the privacy of the survey.

“This feels inexcusable. If someone feels strongly enough about it and has the resources (say they work for Aus Post) they could filter letters with Yes or No votes depending on their own feelings on it,” one person wrote.

“This absolutely does not feel like an OK thing for the Government to not have ensured.”

The ABS commenced sending out same-sex marriage surveys on Tuesday, and expect to have all forms mailed out by September 25.

People have until 6:00pm on November 7 to return their completed surveys by post.

Some advocates for change had taken to social media to encourage people to put glitter in their envelopes.

But the ABS took a dim view of that suggestion, making it clear that any envelopes with glitter in them would simply be binned.

“Any extraneous material inserted in the envelope with the survey will be destroyed. This could also contaminate processing machinery or result in the survey also being destroyed and not processed,” it said.

A spokesperson for Matthias Cormann, Acting Special Minister of State, said Australia Post had undertaken a thorough review ahead of the survey and would have additional security measures in place during the process.

“Australia Post are also working closely with the authorities to maintain the integrity of the mail network,” she said.

Hmmm I wonder how the butthurt post office UNION workers will know what NO VOTES they are carrying..
    So they can refuse THEM.
We don’t want to see them seriously scarred and affected for life.. Do we

Just have to fold the paper several times before placing it in the RPE? Then I suppose the Census staff will complain about RSI from all the unfolding or take stress leave on full pay.

It’s the only option, Pen. seeing as we can’t put any extra cover into the envelope to mask the form itself.

    • Crankykoala 14/09/2017, 9:49 am

Yep, I’ll be putting a little black plastic cover around mine.

    • Joe Blogs 14/09/2017, 10:37 am

Just write “SWALK” on the flap of the envelope.

Why is the bar code placed directly under the box to tick YES or NO?

The identification bar should not be near the vote.

This is a disgrace! We should march, we should take to the streets, a total ban on the homophobic $2 torches from The Reject Shop is the only way forward!

I wonder how easy it is with a computer, scanner, colour printer, to print off a few thousand forms and envelopes and send them in? I’d say it would be dead easy and as there is no name on the form itself, once the envelope is opened who would know?

They SAY the vote has no personal ID attached etc etc.
So WHY are they barcoded, to identify where/who they came from?

  • geoffey 14/09/2017, 9:53 am

it’s a non compulsory postal vote, so who cares?

    • Bushkid 14/09/2017, 10:05 am

Those of us who do vote do care. I saw yesterday that there have already been people putting their “unwanted” forms up for sale of Ebay, prompting all selling platforms (gumtree etc) to declare they’ll delete all such offers.

This whole thing is just going from farce to utterly ridiculous already. That the crossed boxes can be so easily read through the supposedly confidential envelopes is a disgrace. That people will be reluctant to insert even one sheet of opaque material to protect their privacy thanks to the ABS edict that anything with inclusions will be discarded is a mockery. Fair enough, crap like glitter is just juvenile and stupid and will indeed clog up the counting machinery, but to discourage people from protecting their privacy and the integrity of their vote is wrong. With unemployment so high, maybe a few people could be put on to open and unfold the ones that concerned folks have protected.

The way this SSM postal survey is cobbled together lends itself to the Yes vote… and before any conclusions are drawn, I shall be voting NO.
I am wondering if the vote counting will be observed by scrutineers.. my past experience tells me a rabid leftie/Union/Getup push will stop at nothing to get their result..
Also are they counting to make sure they don’t get anymore returned votes than they sent.
Another example of how the majority are being manipulated by a minority group. Getup and all the socialist/lefties/Unionists are skillfully with the aid of the compliant false news media and weak politicians allowing this to happen…of course those groups have mega funds available to fund this.

Paint the envelope black with a texta pen in the area where the recorded vote would show when inserted into the envelope and then place a sticky white label over the blacked out portion. Simples yes?

  • Biking Voter 14/09/2017, 1:24 pm

Today, just now I took great delight in marking the NO box on my Survey Form.

Survey? It was supposed to be a plebiscite, survey is a meaningless waste of money, but then so was a plebiscite going to be.

  • Jarrah 14/09/2017, 2:04 pm

Wrap the postal vote paper in carbon paper and put that in the envelope, they will not be able to see anything.

    • Biking Voter 14/09/2017, 5:45 pm

You can’t do that as it explicitly states to not include anything else in the envelope and if you do, then your vote will be excluded from the count.
