What do gays hope to gain if homosexual marriage is legalised? And Turnbull and Shorten get to polish their virtue badge?
They hope to be fully accepted into society.
Regretfully, they have the same hope as a long-tailed cat at a rocking chair convention, or a flasher in a nudist colony.
Proponents of same sex marriages put the argument as equality – in other words equal with every other citizen in our community when it comes to rights.
Well, equality was basically the argument put when Neville Wran legalised prostitution.
It was real high minded then too.
Protecting women was the big selling point. Save them from exploitation and discrimination.
OH&S would see to the details. Prostitutes were now integrated into society. Full members.
How did it work out?
Peer reviewed studies particularly from our neighbours in the Long White Cloud show that neither legalisation nor decriminalisation improves the health, safety or human rights of women.
And human rights is the big cry with homosexual marriage, is it not?
It is worse than just not improving, in fact, prostitution increases inequality and maintains race, class, and caste status.
And equality is the other big cry with homosexual marriage, is it not?
Prostitution in Nevada for example is not only legal – it is glamourised – and in numberless movies the golden-hearted prostitute is shown as early 20’s, beautiful, witty, great hair, and as game as Ned Kelly. The reality is different.
Nevada has the highest rates of domestic violence-related homicide in the United States, and rape and sexual assault are rife. Women of Nevada are raped at rates that are twice those of New York and 25% higher than the U.S. average.
One investigator reported, “the trailer-type compounds are in the middle of nowhere and the women often live in prison-like conditions, locked in or forbidden to leave…” The women in the legal brothels are considered to be “private contractors” and must register as prostitutes at the sheriff’s office. They are also legally required to be tested once a week for sexually transmitted diseases – something not required of their clients. The women must present their medical clearance to the police station and be fingerprinted.”
Brothel owners take half the women’s earnings plus the women have to pay tips and fees and for their own supplies. “Nevada’s unlawful prostitution industry,” the U.S. Government says, “is already nine times greater than the state’s legal brothels.”
In fact, the famous Mustang Ranch is modelled on a prison, and the women used to be called inmates. The owner complains, “As soon as you legalise it turns the predators loose… You have to regulate. We have a stable of 1,000. [a “stable” of prostitutes? Nice way to talk about women.] If Susan didn’t run this place with an iron fist it would get out of control. You need to run this place with tough love.”
The women are not allowed out without permission and even then are accompanied by a pimp. Many are not allowed to have a car and must work 14-hour shifts for fifteen days in a row. The manager even bragged about pimping a 22-year old learning disabled girl since she was turning tricks at 12 years of age.
Ah well, that is the US. Isn’t it? Not civilised like us. No.
The utter failure of legalisation is illustrated by the system here. The Occupational Safety and Health regulations guarantee the right of all prostitutes not to have their health put at risk. Mighty fine words, Senator.
Therefore, to protect the “sex workers” from health risks of STDs and HIV, the customers, not the women, would need to have health checks prior to any contact. It is, after all, the customer who brings the harm to the worker. And do they?
Guidelines to implement the laws have been drawn up. One guideline is to have a 100-watt bulb in the room so the woman can do a visual inspection of the man’s penis to see that he has no obvious disease or, if on an “outcall,” take a small flashlight to do the same.
Further, she is to “share her knowledge” of hygiene and health and disease with the customer. Besides the fact that sexual diseases do not all have visual manifestations, and anyway most women are not nurses and would not know what to look for.
And what sort of kook wants the prostitute to have his bits and pieces inspected by a flashlight? It’s a wonder that the loop-the-loops in OH&S don’t ask the prostitute to take a photograph of his wang, send it to a central checking office for comparisons with known diseased wangs, and tell her to wait until a public servant gives the all-clear.
And as for the woman sitting on the end of the bed and “sharing” her knowledge of syphilis, gonorrhoea and aids, with a wee illustrated notebook???!!!
So it was legalised – and prostitutes are now welcome in normal society?
Are there stories in the media about prostitutes who play hockey or win gold medals in athletics?
Are there articles about prostitutes who “come out” saying, “Whore and Proud”?
Is prostitution offered as a work-choice at technical colleges? Do girls at high school work in a brothel for a few weeks during the ‘work experience’ time?
Do prostitutes mingle with non-prostitute women; or do they prefer to mix with other prostitutes?
In fact, did they not drop the word prostitute and replace it with sex worker, just as homosexual was replaced by gay?
Why was homosexual replaced by gay?
Because there was a perceived stigma about the word? And replacing it with gay was thought advantageous? I’m not a homosexual – I am a gay – don’t you ever watch Will and Grace? We are all bright and witty and have great colour sense and even play football. Well, so the TV tells us. So it must be true.
Changing words won’t last – any more than changing the definition of marriage. Already gay is being used as an epithet. Disgraceful, of course, but there it is. Gay will eventually go the same path as poofter and shirt-lifter.
It won’t make a button of difference if homosexual marriage is legalised when it comes to acceptability.
Everyone knows what a marriage is, they know what a family is, they know that two men or three men or six men legally married are not married in the same sense as the rest of the world knows it.
Legalisation of homosexual marriage will not give the equality promised. Any more than passing a statute that a Honda is the equal of a Maserati increases the value of the Honda.
It is more than possible that some are voting NO for no other reason than because YES is repugnant to common sense and experience.
